It was announced the day before yesterday that Kaizer Chiefs had come to an agreement with Itumeleng Khune that would see him return to Naturena, but why did he come back?

Over the last few months Khune has been the most talked about player in South African football as rumours were bandied around regarding his next move following the decision to leave the Amakhosi.

The goalkeeper had often spoken of his desire to move overseas, while Mamelodi Sundowns had also shown an interest in his signature, however at the end of the saga he ended up back where he started.

Chiefs –
Naturena has been Khune's home for many, many years. He came through the youth ranks at the club and was/is adored by the club's fanbase.

Also, Khune looks set to remain as the club's top earner at Naturena and one of the highest paid players in the league while maintaining his status as an A-list celebrity in South Africa.

A source close to the player's dealings, "Itu realised that he wanted to be back at the club. He knows it's his home and wants to be there. He has been there since a teenager and came and he knows where he belongs."

Overseas –
Despite Khune's insistence that he wanted to make the move overseas at the end of his Kaizer Chiefs contract, it appears that either the money wasn't good enough, or the 'keeper felt he was better than the clubs he turned down.

It is known that Khune said no to an offer put forward by a Danish club, while there was also believed to be Spanish and Portuguese teams keeping him on their radar before he agreed terms with Chiefs.

Sundowns –
Pitso Mosimane did have several meetings regarding the possibility of bringing Khune on board at Chloorkop, with Mosimane himself being a big fan of the goalkeeper's, however they are currently cutting their budget and landing Khune wouldn't have help in that regard.

Meanwhile, another factor for them not pursuing Khune's signature is that they didn't want to upset the apple cart by chasing a former Chiefs player, and aren't unhappy with the current 'keepers at their disposal.

Khune's return to Naturena is expected to be finalised in the next week or so.
